Air paths around systems
Utility fog can help teams see intake recirculation, blocked exhaust paths, competing fans and enclosure leakage tendencies. Because many electronics and process systems are moisture-sensitive, the method requires explicit approval and often reduced output, physical separation or a different tracer.
Pair visualization with temperature, velocity, pressure and operating-state data. The fog image alone does not establish thermal performance.
Know when the work becomes a formal smoke study
When the purpose is to demonstrate unidirectional airflow protection, support sterile manufacturing, evaluate an ISO-classified area or satisfy a USP/FDA/GMP requirement, move to a controlled protocol with qualified personnel, documented dynamic conditions and appropriate review.

Applications requiring a separate approved method
- Fire-alarm, smoke-detector or life-safety-system testing.
- Respirator fit testing, gas-detection calibration or industrial-hygiene exposure measurement.
- Duct leakage, building-envelope leakage or pressure-decay testing.
- Explosive, oxygen-deficient, flammable or chemically reactive environments.
- Direct introduction into product, patient, sterile process or energized equipment without authorization.
Questions this page should settle
Can I use a utility fogger to find a duct leak?
It may reveal a visible pathway in some situations, but it does not quantify leakage and is not a replacement for an approved duct-leakage test.
Can I use it around occupied spaces?
Only after reviewing the fog medium, concentration, ventilation, alarms, sensitive occupants and facility policy. Use the minimum approved output.
